Institute of European Integration and Policy

ATHENS EU MODEL

Athens EU Model is a four-day simulation of two European Union (EU) institutions, the European Commission and the Council of the EU (Council of Ministers). The first three years of its implementation, it was one of the main activities of the Institute of European Integration and Policy (IEIP) Jean Monnet Module "Moving the EU forward", co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Commission. Since 2019, it is being co-organized by the IEIP and the Europe Direct Information Center hosted at the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP).

The simulation is open to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as graduates, from Greek and foreign Universities of various disciplines. Each year, a different agenda topic is selected and participants undertake the task to negotiate and promote their policy positions. Apart from EU Commissioners, Council Ministers and journalists, the participants are assigned various extra roles, depending on the needs of relevant topic to be discussed.

Prior to the simulation, three preparatory lectures take place, which provide thorough knowledge on the EU institutional framework, the decision-making and legislative processes, as well as information about the topic under discussion.

Both the lectures and the simulation are conducted in English.
